Quite simply, the finest place to catch live music in Chiang Mai is at Boy Blues Bar. Six nights a week (closed on Sunday) this small, second storey live music joint pumps out a classic blues soundtrack played live by the oh-so talented ‘Boy’ and his regular roster of both Thai and foreign musicians. Located in the Kalare Night Bazaar, look for the stairs up to the bar in front of the food court (although you will hear it long before you see it).
Mondays are officially Jam Night but if you can play a mean twelve bar blues then inform the bar and Boy is likely to ask you up on stage to show your stuff to the usually very eager audience. The low seating isn’t the most comfortable and the drinks list is limited, but with cheap beers straight from the fridge you’ll never go thirsty. Read More...
- Opening Hours: 20:00 - 01:00
- Location: 2/f Kalare Night Bazaar (look for the food court and listen for the music)
Blue Bat Rooftop Bar is the highest rooftop bar in Chiang Mai with clear views of the Night Bazaar, Riverside and Old City. Sitting on the 24th floor of Pornping Tower Hotel, the décor is a little staid, certainly when compared to rooftop bars in Bangkok, but it is full of charm and the drinks are excellent value for money. Blue Bat Rooftop Bar is also famous for its barbeque buffet, although there are better places to eat. This is perfect for getting a bird’s eye view of the city before dinner or as a nightcap.
- Opening Hours: 11:00 to 24:00
- Location: Top floor of Pornping Tower Hotel
This huge, throbbing nightclub can be found on the ground floor of the President Hotel, a short taxi ride north from Chiang Mai Night Bazaar. Inside, the mostly middle-class Thai crowd sticks to the main live music room, huddling around the miniature tables whilst sipping their watered down whiskey and sodas. However, Fabrique does welcome an ever-expanding foreign clientele who tend to enjoy the chilled-out beer garden at the back as well as a second room which enforces a strict techno and house music policy – appeasing anybody with an adversity to Thai indie rock. Please note that foreigners have to pay 300 baht to enter, but you do get drinks vouchers!
- Opening Hours: 22:00-03:00 Fri-Sun (weekday openings vary)
- Address: 226 Wichayanont, Lobby of the President Hotel

Dusit Mix Bar at the chic Dusit D2 Hotel has a modern conceptual style in keeping with the hotel brand and is open to guests and non-guests. With plush seating, interesting lighting and a huge selection of drinks –cocktails, particularly – this is one of the most up market bars in all of Chiang Mai. This is the perfect place to come for a couple of expertly mixed mojitos if the frantic shopping action gets too much. Located in the lobby of the hotel, Mix Bar is easy to find on Chang Klan Road in the centre of the Night Bazaar area.
- Opening Hours: 11:00-01:00
- Address: 100 Chang Klan Road

O'Malleys is the largest bar in the Anusarn Market section of the Night Bazaar. Located on Chang Klan Road, it stocks an excellent range of European beers and has Guinness on tap (as you would expect from an Irish bar). It’s a great spot for people watching as Anusarn Market is fringed by bars and restaurants with an enjoyable market section running through the middle. Inside the bar they show all the latest sports, but we enjoy the outside section with views of the market traders. O'Malleys is the perfect place for wives to drop off their husbands for an hour so they can enjoy a little shopping in peace.
- Opening Hours: 13:00 – 01:00
- Location: Anusarn Market (on the right-hand side of the market as you enter from Chang Klan Road)

This popular nightclub is in the basement of Pornping Tower Hotel and stays open late into the early hours. The music policy sticks to Thai style house music so expect the bass to be pumping all night and the clientele of mainly foreign men and Thai women to be up on the dance floor or sinking bottles of whisky.
With a name like Bubbles Nightclub it should come as no surprise that some of the girls frequenting this nightclub are not just there to have fun, but in truth is it is similar to several other nightclubs in Chiang Mai, and most people are just out for a good time.
- Opening Hours: 21:00 – 02:00
- Location: Basement of Pornping Tower Hotel
Unlike many of the other Thai boxing rings in Chiang Mai, the Muay Thai bouts at Kalare Night Bazaar are the real deal with competitors trying their hardest to win. For anyone really interested in watching a genuine fight then this is a great option. The seating is a bit make shift but the crowd are passionate and you can get close enough to feel the sweat of the fighters…providing you want to. Fights are scheduled every Friday night and selected other nights so do look out for advertising around the Night Bazaar detailing who is fighting and when.
- Opening Hours: Fights start from 21:00 every Friday and other selected nights
- Location: Behind Kalare Night Bazaar
When you’re craving a draft pint of English ale and some hearty pub grub The Red Lion in Chiang Mai will hit the spot. This two-storey venue has all the dark wooden fittings and cosy booths you would expect to find in an English country pub, with the added benefit of being bang in the centre of the Night Bazaar in Chiang Mai. Granted, this is not for everyone, but if you want to see a bit of risqué nightlife in central Chiang Mai then Foxy Lady a Go Go is the recommended place to go. Located in an alley behind Dusit D2 Hotel, you will find plenty of ladies hanging about outside to welcome you in. A favourite with stag parties, Foxy Lady a Go Go is an honest establishment (a bill is brought with every drink) with two floors following the tried and tested formula of a central podium with plenty of girls dancing suggestively. This is one of the only go-go bars in Chiang Mai and widely considered the best. Entry is free and beers start from 125 baht.
- Opening Hours: 19:00 – 01:00
- Location: Tha Phae Soi 1, Behind Dusit D2 Hotel
Chiang Mai is big on chilled out bars playing reggae music, and if you are looking for a place to chill out with a big bottle of Singha beer, shoot a few games of pool and listen to some chilled tunes in the Night Bazaar area then Rastsa Cafe is advised. Located on the corner of Loi Kroh and Charoen Phatet Road close to the famous Iron Bridge, it is easy to find and hard to leave.
- Opening Hours: 12:00 – 24:00
- Location: On the corner of Loi Kroh and Charoen Phatet Rd. (just before the Iron Bridge on the way to the riverside)
