If you are looking for one stop shop for quality handicrafts and local products in Chiang Mai, then we recommend a browse of the stalls and shops in OP Place just a few steps from the bustling night bazaar. This large airy shopping mall has made local artisans its focus, and we had a great time rummaging through the collection. A bonus for anyone who find the night market outside a bit too busy and hot, the space is air-conditioned, there is a nice cafe and you don’t have to worry about the stress of haggling, although if you buy a few items from one stall and smile nicely you might get a discount. OP Place is easy to find, right next to Le Meridien a, bold yellow hotel that stands tall about the night market district and is open daily from 11:00 until 22:00.

The shopping centre is split into different sections. Along the front of OP Place, facing out onto Chang Klan Road you will find some high-end boutiques. Villa Cini is part of a textile company sells a variety of excellent quality silk and cotton items: beautiful white nightdresses with lace detailing, bold cushion covers and sweet stuffed animals for small children. Sophie Roumeliotie, an interior design with a passion for Chiang Mai’s natural materials has a shop next door selling fabrics and home decor. Along this run of stores there is also a branch of Doi Tung cafe, where you can get some tasty coffee and snacks. Doi Tung was originally a development project set up by the royal family to support families in a remote forested area near Chiang Rai, so you can enjoy your slice of cake and support local development. Doi Tung also sells a cute range of mugs and bags with sweet sketches of the hill tribe on them.

The high-ceilinged central lobby displays information about goods that are sold in OP Place as well as the initiatives in the area, supported by the local groups and the British Council. A range of different stands run around the edge of OP Place with plenty of unusual and interesting handicrafts and gifts to take home. Our favourites include the Hand shop, where you can pick up some original cotton satchels in plain or gingham fabrics. At the stall next door you will find some unusual stuffed toys – huggable aeroplanes, rockets and songtaews sit amongst the usual cuddly animals. In the far corner OP Place have taken a selection of smaller brands and brought them together in one scarlet lined boutique. Here you will find leather handbags, hand-crafted jewellery, scarves and heavenly smelling beauty products.
