The Night Bazaar Nightlife
What to Do at Night in The Night Bazaar
This is an area that comes to life when the sun goes down. During the day you will be hard pushed to experience the energy and sheer vibrancy that emerges with the setting up of the stalls and consequent crowds of people. Like the goods on sale at the Night Bazaar, the nightlife is varied. If you walk away from the crowds on the Chang Klan Road down towards the Loi Kroh you will come across Guitar Man, a Chiang Mai institution. Opposite this bar on Jarean Phatet Road there is a chilled out Rasta bar and few beer bars.
For something more upbeat the Kalare Food Court has nightly lady boy cabarets and Muay Thai fights (remove, on). Further up the Chang Klan Road, past the markets as you approach the Chiang Mai City area there is a high concentration of popular bars, with the area geared towards drinking and dancing. There are also a few pubs around the Night Bazaar area, perfect for stopping and having a mid shopping drink or resting in while someone else wants to shop.Read More

The Beer Republic
This unpretentious Nimmanahaemin bar offers a whopping 15 different international beers, lagers and ciders on tap – not to mention some of the juiciest burgers we’ve ever sank our teeth into in Chiang Mai. From the pale ales of Belgium, to London’s finest bitters and a selection of more familiar names like Hoegaarden and Leffe, The Beer Republic certainly has one of the most comprehensive range of brews in Chiang Mai. Don’t know what to drink? Then don’t worry, the part indoor, part outdoor bar provides a convenient five or ten sampler menu for 295 and 550 baht respectively.
- Opening Hours: 16:00-24:00

Quite simply, the finest place to catch live music in Chiang Mai is at Boy Blues Bar. Six nights a week (closed on Sunday) this small, second storey live music joint pumps out a classic blues soundtrack played live by the oh-so talented ‘Boy’ and his regular roster of both Thai and foreign musicians. Located in the Kalare Night Bazaar, look for the stairs up to the bar in front of the food court (although you will hear it long before you see it).
Mondays are officially Jam Night but if you can play a mean twelve bar blues then inform the bar and Boy is likely to ask you Read More...
- Opening Hours: 20:00 - 01:00
- Location: 2/f Kalare Night Bazaar (look for the food court and listen for the music)
This popular nightclub is in the basement of Pornping Tower Hotel and stays open late into the early hours. The music policy sticks to Thai style house music so expect the bass to be pumping all night and the clientele of mainly foreign men and Thai women to be up on the dance floor or sinking bottles of whisky.
With a name like Bubbles Nightclub it should come as no surprise that some of the girls frequenting this nightclub are not just there to have fun, but in truth is it is similar to several other nightclubs in Chiang Mai, and most people are just out for a good time.
- Opening Hours: 21:00 – 02:00
- Location: Basement of Pornping Tower Hotel
Blue Bat Rooftop Bar
Blue Bat Rooftop Bar is the highest rooftop bar in Chiang Mai with clear views of the Night Bazaar, Riverside and Old City. Sitting on the 24th floor of Pornping Tower Hotel, the décor is a little staid, certainly when compared to rooftop bars in Bangkok, but it is full of charm and the drinks are excellent value for money. Blue Bat Rooftop Bar is also famous for its barbeque buffet, although there are better places to eat. This is perfect for getting a bird’s eye view of the city before dinner or as a nightcap.
- Opening Hours: 11:00 to 24:00
- Location: Top floor of Pornping Tower Hotel
Chiang Mai’s Ladyboy Cabaret Show is the most popular show in the city and on the list of things to do for many tourists visiting Thailand for the first time. Located in the Night Bazaar the nightly show features some of Chiang Mai’s prettiest and liveliest lady boys. The performers sing, dance and put on a good show for the audience while dressed up in outrageous dresses, full make up and wigs. The performers also ask for audience participation and will bring people up on stage and ask questions. The show is in parts funny, but never goes raunchy so it is suitable for couples and even families. Read More...

Dusit Mix Bar at Dusit D2
Probably the trendiest bar in Chiang Mai. The Mix Bar takes on the ultra-modern Dusit Thani’s conceptual style with plush seating, interesting lighting and a huge selection of drinks, particularly cocktails. Situated in the lobby of the hotel, the interior is punctuated by straight architectural lines making it an attractive choice to enjoy a drink in light and airy surroundings.
- Opening Hours: 11:00-01:00
- Address: 100 Chang Klan Road
- Tel: +66 (0) 5399 9999
This huge, throbbing nightclub can be found on the ground floor of the President Hotel, a short taxi ride north from Chiang Mai Night Bazaar. Inside, the mostly middle-class Thai crowd sticks to the main live music room, huddling around the miniature tables whilst sipping their watered down whiskey and sodas. However, Fabrique does welcome an ever-expanding foreign clientele who tend to enjoy the chilled-out beer garden at the back as well as a second room which enforces a strict techno and house music policy – appeasing anybody with an adversity to Thai indie rock. Please note that foreigners have to pay 300 baht to enter, but you do get drinks vouchers!
- Opening Hours: 22:00-03:00 Fri-Sun (weekday openings vary)
- Location: 226 Wichayanont, Lobby of the President Hotel
- Tel: +66 53 251 028
Foxy Lady A Go Go
Foxy Lady is much bigger than Spotlight A Go Go, the other Go Go bar near Tha Pae gate, and located in the Nigh Bazaar behind the Dusit D2 Hotel. Girls are clearly younger and prettier here, maybe because prices are a bit higher, with a beer starting at 125 Baht. The place features 2 levels, but the second floor doesn't seem to used much. Stage is small and can only accommodate 4 to 5 girls. Entry is free, but there is no show here either.
- Location: behind Dusit D2
Good View Bar & Restaurant
This long-running riverside joint keeps things simple, with a sturdy menu of drinks and Thai food delivered (with a smile) all day long next to Chiang Mai’s River Ping. The main indoor section is spacious, and the nightly live band keeps the atmosphere bubbling away nicely. However, Good View’s main draw is its location, perched on the banks of the river (although seating next to the water’s edge is rather limited compared to inside. So, to get around this, arrive before the sun sets (when all the locals are still at work), or reserve a table through the contact details below.
- Opening Hours: 12:00-02:00
- Location: 13 Charoen Raj Road, Chiang Mai

A cosy place where you can listen to good music, chat with friends or make new ones. Anyone is welcome to play music or sing in a relaxed atmosphere drawing a regular crowd including tourists and backpackers. The walls are adorned with prints and photographs of famous rockers including The Rolling Stones, The Who and Led Zeppelin which sums up the bar's way of thinking, Rock and Roll Chiang Mai style.

Kalare Food Court
From 19:30 musicians entertain with renditions of traditional northern Thai music while women accompany them on stage to dance in traditional outfits from different northern Thai ethnic groups. On the other side of the Kalare food court you can watch Muay Thai boxing before progressing onto something more elaborate in the form of an all singing and dancing lady boy cabaret, essential viewing for any of Thailand’s visitors.
- Opening Hours: 17:00-23:00
- Address: Chang Klan Road
Muay Thai at Kalare Night Bazaar
Unlike many of the other Thai boxing rings in Chiang Mai, the Muay Thai bouts at Kalare Night Bazaar are the real deal with competitors trying their hardest to win. For anyone really interested in watching a genuine fight then this is a great option. The seating is a bit make shift but the crowd are passionate and you can get close enough to feel the sweat of the fighters…providing you want to. Fights are scheduled every Friday night and selected other nights so do look out for advertising around the Night Bazaar detailing who is fighting and when.
- Opening Hours: Fights start from 21:00 every Friday and other selected nights
- Location: Behind Kalare Night Bazaar
Night Bazaar Bar
A good place to come and have a drink mid-shop or before you tackle the Night Bazaar, Reasonably priced drinks are well paired with the bar's location on the fringe of Kalare Market making it a good place to relax away from the crowds.
OASIS Rooftop Garden Bar
Most of Chiang Mai’s rooftop bars are set a little outside the Old City – or just have no views at all. OASIS Rooftop Garden Bar is an exception to the rule, located just inside the northeastern corner of the old moat. Chill-out tunes compliment the excellent views over to Doi Suthep Mountain perfectly, even more so if you arrive as the sun sinks below the horizon (between 18:00-19:00). Emphasis is more on the cocktails rather than anything else, with a short but quality lineup of classics and signature mixes alongside your usual bottled beers and Thai-style pub snacks.
- Opening Hours: 17:00-01:00
- Location: 13/1 Soi Jang Sripoom 1, Sripoom Road, Amphor Muang (near Charcoa House Hotel)

The Red Lion
Featuring both an air conditioned bar and open air terrace, The Red Lion is a long time favourite with drinkers in Chiang Mai. Situated opposite the car park of McDonalds, the terrace over looks the night market which is a pleasant alternative if you don’t fancy watching the live sports on offer. A pint of Heineken is just 100 baht while other beers on offer include Singha, Chang, Tiger, Strongbow Cider and draught Guinness and Kilkenny.

Warm Up Cafe'
Although Warm Up on Nimmanhaemin Road calls itself a ‘café’, you won’t find anybody casually sipping coffee mugs or catching up on their work here. This Chiang Mai nightlife institution is best-known as the city’s biggest and best club – although come early enough and you can enjoy the pleasant alfresco bar area before the crowds, and ear drum-bursting music, arrives. The place is split up into various sections; the more laidback outside terrace fronting the venue leads into the large room at the back. It’s here where the local bands belt out the Thai pop, with each and every table almost tipping over, stacked high with whiskey bottles, buckets of ice, glasses and boxes of free popcorn.
- Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 18:00-02:00
- Location: 40 Nimmanhaemin Rd, Chiang Mai
