Serving probably the tastiest patisseries in Chiang Mai W by Wanlamun is a favourite spot for afternoon teas and ladies who lunch. Set in an attractive garden on a quiet soi near Thae Pae Gate they also serve some delicious Thai food, and with a pretty air-conditioned glasshouse to enjoy all these treats it’s surprising that this café is not busier. One reason may be that whilst it isn’t difficult to find, it is off well-worn tourist trail. To get there is only a ten minute walk from Thae Pae Gate. Walk down Tha Phae Road and turn left onto Chang Moi 2, from there it is only five minutes’ walk on the right hand side of the street, with the cream and orange sign.

The café is split into three sections, and you can sit wherever your mood and the weather allows. Our favourite spot is the light and airy glasshouse, where you can admire the pretty gardens beyond without having to suffer in the afternoon heat. Inside the beautiful cream coloured house is a French inspired tearoom decorated with warm tones and fresh flowers, but the majority of tables are on a large covered veranda, cooled by fans. The small gardens are tastefully manicured with hanging baskets and hedges shaped like hearts. W by Wanlamun is open from 11:30 until 22:00, and once night has fallen the gardens are lit up by twinkling lights.
If you want to come for a full meal then bear in mind that lunch is served from 11:30 to 14:30 and dinner from 18:30 to 22:00, but cake and drinks are available throughout the day. The main menu covers the Thai classics, carefully prepared with quality ingredients. We enjoyed a chicken massaman curry with roti, perfectly spiced with large chunks of potato and freshly fried roti to dip, and a penang beef curry with rice. Portions come in two sizes, so if you are feeling peckish make sure you go for larger one. The fresh Vietnamese spring rolls are beautifully presented and virtuous as well as delicious, which is handy because the desserts were definitely made for treats.
It is almost impossible to pick just one cake from the selection in the glass fridge on the terrace. We recommend coming with a friend so you can share more than one, and if you order three they are beautifully presented on a cake stand. One of the simplest yet most delicious desserts you can have is the éclair, filled with vanilla custard and lightly dusted with icing sugar. The miniature tarte tatin is so meticulously constructed that you feel guilty sticking your spoon in it, but the delicately caramelised apples balance out the sweet base. For chocoholics we recommend the chocolate tart, with a shiny ganache covering the rich almond and chocolate flavours. After a few hours relaxing here you can understand why people might want to keep this place secret, these are easily some of the best cakes in Chiang Mai.
