Vieng Joom On is a beautiful teahouse on the banks of the Mae Ping river, famous for unusual blends of teas and delicious Thai cakes and desserts. Located on Charoenraj Road it is impossible to miss, the exterior walls painted a bright fuchsia pink. If you are staying in Chiang Mai Old Town we recommend taking a tuk tuk or Songtaew to Vieng Joom On, as the walk is a little far. The teahouse is open every day from 10:00 until 19:00 and it’s the perfect spot for a light lunch or a sweet treat. Along the same stretch of road you will find some interesting artisan and craft shops that are also worth checking out.

There are also plenty of bold splashes of colour throughout Vieng Joom On, and you walk straight into the teahouse’s shop, where you can buy a variety of loose teas that are displayed in large tins. The team behind the counter are more than happy to tell you more about the different flavours. Or if you prefer you can check out the variety of ready packed teas in ornate packaging and some honey and jams created in Chiang Mai. Just behind this you will find a small indoor tea room, but we recommend heading right through the teahouse and onto the terrace outside. The first half is covered, but head down a small set of steps and you can enjoy your iced tea under a pink parasol or overlooking the water. Vieng Joom On has such a relaxed atmosphere that you will probably linger longer than you planned.
If tea is your thing then you’ve come to the right place, but even if you are not a fan there are plenty of different varieties that may tempt you, including some iced sweetened teas. The chamomile cooler comes in a tall glass and is garnished with fruit, the ideal refresher for a hot day in Chiang Mai. We also enjoyed watching the blooming jasmine teas unfurl in the hot water, a little bit of tea magic! A pot of tea costs 180 baht and iced teas start at 120 baht. Vieng Joom On food menu is extremely appetising, ranging from sandwiches and rotis to tea scented cakes and desserts. Our favourite accompaniment for tea is classic scones, and here at the teahouse they come warm and served with fresh fruit compote and cream.
