When the night falls in Chiang Mai there’s no better place to be than by the water. Deck 1 is a modern smart-casual restaurant that backs onto the Mae Ping River, serving a range of Thai and fusion dishes with efficient service. We recommend booking ahead for the tables on the deck, which are very popular especially at the weekend. Located on the east bank, a leisurely stroll across the iron bridge from the Night Bazaar area, the restaurant has a bold orange theme running through the dining room and it really stands out amongst the more traditional buildings that line the river. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday a live jazz band plays from 20:00 until 22:00.

The restaurant is open from 07:00, as it serves breakfast for the guests of the nearby Rarinjinda Wellness Spa Resort (diners not staying at the hotel are welcome too), and closes at midnight. The main dining room of the restaurant is encased in glass and metal, meaning there’s plenty of natural light during the day. Outdoors, the terrace is split into two sections: a small deck backs onto the restaurant, ideal as it blocks the noise of traffic from the road in front of the restaurant, and tables on the larger veranda are only shaded by bamboo and don’t face the river, so have less of a romantic, tranquil atmosphere, although thankfully the road isn’t too busy. A ribbon of bright orange runs through the restaurant, and the funky modern design is different from anything else in the city.
Food at Deck 1 is a range of familiar sounding Thai dishes, but here it often has a fusion twist. The Khao Soi, a northern Thai classic recipe, is a coconut noodle soup packed with flavour and gently spiced, while the satay chicken is served with plenty of nutty sauce and chunks of toasted bread. A firm vegetarian favourite is the tofu green curry served with buttery roti. Japanese flavours come courtesy of the Deck’s signature main dish: a large fillet of salmon served on a bed of wasabi mash with wakame (Japanese seaweed) sauce. The dessert selection is equally as impressive, ranging from crepe Suzette to mango pudding.
There’s a cocktail list as long as your arm, covering all the classics and some house creations. The selection of wines by the glass or carafe is also decent. Deck 1 is an excellent choice for evening dinner thanks to its funky design, delicious food and riverside location.
