Fah Lanna Spa in Chiang Mai City

Chiang Mai City Activities

The high, white-washed walls and plants that border Fah Lanna Spa in Chiang Mai’s Old Town give you a hint of their philosophy: keeping all the noise and stress of the city outside this pretty retreat. Offering a variety of traditional Thai and oil massages in a picturesque water garden, half a day can easily be spent at Fah Lanna Spa enjoying the relaxing treatments and forgetting the rest of Chiang Mai exists. As the sign outside the spa says this place is “easy to find”. In fact there two locations for Fah Lanna – in the Old Town is a more luxurious experience, but if you are staying near the Night Bazaar but sure to check out their cute massage shop. Although both locations offer great value and the treatments are the same, the prices are lower at the shop to reflect the more local, rustic ambience.

The Fah Lanna Spa is located on Waing Kaew Road, near the corner of Jabhan Road. You can’t miss it, but if you are staying further than a walk away take advantage of their shuttle which will pick you up and drop you back at the hotel. Open from 10:00 until 22:00, last appointments can be booked for 21:00, but be sure to book ahead as Fah Lanna is a popular spa. This is one of the prettiest spas I have ever visited, with an ornate wooden entrance and small bridge leading into the cosy reception with plenty of comfortable chairs to lounge on whilst you enjoy a cup of herbal tea and select your treatments. From here you can enjoy the view of the long wooden walkway stretching the length of the fish pond, fringed by bamboo and ferns. The staff are friendly and happy to make recommendations that will suit your needs.

The treatment rooms and facilities are just as exquisite, combining natural elements with subtle touches of Lanna décor. Both the single rooms and couples rooms come with en suite shower and bathroom, but if you are considering a package then you may also wish to enjoy the in-room Jacuzzi. There is also a rather unusual herbal steam cave, where you can enjoy heady herbal scents which deeply cleanse your skin. Traditional treatments include Thai massage (400 baht for an hour), foot reflexology (600 baht for an hour) and Tok Sen: a traditional northern experience that involves releasing pent up energy using a small wooden hammer and wedge on your body’s pressure points. It’s an unusual but very relaxing experience that you should try at least once – it doesn’t hurt and you really do feel calmer afterwards.

Fah Lanna Spa also offers a series of beauty treatments including body scrubs, facials, waxing, manicures and pedicures. If you are looking for some serious pampering then consider their packages which can last between two and five hours. For a typical Chiang Mai experience we recommend Fah Lanna Northern Style, which is a two hour treatment that includes reflexology, Thai massage and Tok Sen. The Fah Lanna Nirvana (5,200 baht) is the full five hour package that allows you to enjoy everything, starting with an aromatic herbal steam, then a body scrub, wrap, aromatherapy oil massage using a scent of your choice and ending with a facial treatment. Fah Lanna Spa in Chiang Mai’s Old Town offers some of the best massages and treatments around in a stunning location and stands out from the crowd by offering these amazing experiences at great prices.
